Football Community Mourns Loss of Pioneer, Rob Mountford

December 6, 2010

The football community of BC has lost a shine…

Rob Mountford, former Surrey Rams President, former VMFL Vice President and long time North Surrey Minor Football President, passed away on Saturday December 4 after a lengthy illness. Rob dedicated his life to the youth of our communities, which are a better place today because of him.

The following paragraph is posted on the BC Football Hall of Fame website to describe it’s Pioneer Award,

The BC Lions Pioneer Award celebrates the achievement of individuals who have been instrumental in the development and promotion of amateur football in BC.
The recipients are committed to ensuring the prosperity of football in their communities by winning championships, building strong relationships, and building long-standing football clubs and programs. They have opened up opportunities for football in BC that would not be accessible to today’s youth without their tireless efforts.

Rob Mountford, if anyone, was deserving of this honour, which was bestowed upon him during a very emotional segment of the 2009 BC Lions Orange Helmet Awards dinner.
It was perhaps one of Rob’s proudest moments as the capacity crowd of over a thousand members of the BC football community and media rose to their feet in respect as he made his way to the stage to receive the award.
The Titans organization would like to express its most sincere sympathies to the Mountford family, his countless friends and to the North Surrey Minor Fooball organization.

Rob will be missed by all.

The Mountford family has also experienced another misfortune lately with Rob’s daughter, Jackie Mountford Lunot, wife of former Titans Midget Head Coach Darren Lunot, recently having been diagnosed with Stage 4 Cancer.

Jackie and Darren are looking to travel to Germany where doctors have had success with treatment not yet available in Canada. They will be holding several fundraisers to help pay for testing and treatment. The details for the first fundraiser are as follows:

Date: December 18, 2010
Time: 6:30 pm – 10:00 pm
Cost: $30 – includes the Langley Chiefs game, a burger and a beer (or pop for kids)
For tickets or more details, please e-mail Lindsey (harmanlinds@gmail.com) or Kathy (kfurlong@telus.net).

Three years ago, sitting in a room at BC Children’s Hospital, Ross Haugland made a pact with his young son, Josh.

I’ll play as many video games with you as you want, Ross said, and I’ll watch as many cartoons as you want, but on Sundays I get to watch one football game.

Deal, said Josh.

At the time, Ross – a lifelong football fan who was a fullback and long-snapper in his playing days – just wanted to keep tabs on his favourite team, the Minnesota Vikings, while perhaps, temporarily at least, taking his mind off his son’s health struggles, as the then-seven-year-old underwent treatment for neuroblastoma, a rare form of cancer that attacks developing nerve cells, specifically in the adrenal glands.

Ross never expected those Sunday afternoons would one day convince his son – now 10 and on the road to recovery, two years removed from treatment – to hit the gridiron himself.

At the time, it never even seemed a possibility.

“At the start, he just sort of tolerated (the games). But by the end, I think he started to like it,” Ross explains of the pair’s weekly routine.

“And then this past summer, we said to him, ‘OK, you’re all healed up, what sport do you want to play?’ And right out of the blue, he said, ‘football.’

“I just looked at him and said, ‘Really?’”…

November 10, 2010

The regular season ended for all but the Midget Division in VMFL action last weekend and when the smoke cleared three Titans teams emerged with playoff spots and two teams missed the cut by the narrowest of margins.

The Bantam Titans went into the final weekend knowing they had secured a spot in the post season dance, all that remained to be determined was which floor they would be dancing on, win and they finish fourth and host the Cowichan Bulldogs in the VMFL quarterfinal, lose and they face the dreaded early Sunday morning bus and ferry trip to the Island city.

The Titans could leave nothing to chance on Sunday, and the only thing standing between them and fourth place were the 3-6 Burnaby Lions, who were out of the playoff picture but showed up looking to play spoiler. Titans
starting quarterback Zack Skene sat this one out to heal a minor injury but Tavis Knox stepped in and did an excellent job of running a ball control offense behind a strong offensive line that produced four rushing touchdowns on the day, Peter Kilberg had another multiple touchdown game with a pair while Josh Simpson and Nico Docolas each scored once, Docolas also looked sharp while taking some reps at quarterback. The final score was 33-0 Titans, securing fourth place an earning the right to sleep in on Sunday morning while the Cowichan Bulldogs hit the early ferry enroute to South Surrey Athletic Park.

The Titans and Bulldogs both finished the season with 7-3 records, but because the two teams did not meet in the regular season a tiebreaking formula was used and the Titans were awarded fourth place due to strength of schedule.

A fourth place finish is an outstanding result for Head Coach John Hoholuk and his Bantam Titans, especially after having several key players from last year’s VMFL Finalist team move up to the Midget Division.

Losing out on a home playoff game in a tiebreaker formula is a tough pill to swallow but the the fifth place Cowichan Bulldogs will get a chance to prove they belong in the top four this Sunday when they take on the Titans in the
sudden death VMFL quarterfinal game.

This game has all the makings of another fall classic and our Titans will need all the support they can get, kick-off is 2:00 PM at SSAP4.

The Pee Wee White-Titans went in to the final weekend of play needing a win to get in and came up with one of their best outings of the season in a convicting 48-7 win over the Cloverdale Lynx. Kurtis Nicholas led the way for
the Titans with four touchdowns, Jaxon McMillan, Mic Cagnoni each scored once as did Owen Dickie, who scored his first ever touchdown on a nice 30 yard pass and run play that started with a great throw by quarterback Aidan Ellis. Defensive standouts for the Titans were Richard Tichelman, Josh Haugland, Keith Lowe, Hayden Rae and Elijah Burns. The Titans also had a strong outing on special teams with outstanding efforts from Thomas Proulx, Andrew Dehal, Will Taras and Daniel Schindel.

Despite finishing the season with a respectable 6-4 record, and on a three game winning streak, Head Coach Randy Ellis’s White-Titans still finished in eighth place in the highly competitive Pee Wee Division, they actually finished in a tie with Westside but the Warriors were given the nod for seventh place by the strength of schedule tiebreaking formula. The Titans reward for making the playoffs as the eighth seed is a trip to Coquitlam where they will face
the first place finishers, and undefeated, Coquitlam Wildcats. Don’t count the Titans out of this one too soon, they are on a three game winning streak and big running back Kurtis Nicholas has been un-stoppable of late, with a soggy forecast it could come down to who has the best ground game, kick-off is 10:00 AM at Mackin Park.

The Pee Wee Blue-Titans were in the playoff hunt right down to the last game of the season and could have knocked the Westside Warriors out of the playoffs with a win on Sunday in West Vancouver, but they came up on the short end of a 30-12 decision that ended their season just two points shy of a playoff spot. Daniel Damron had another outstanding game running the ball for the Titans and had a great 50 yard touchdown run, Thomas Van Egmond
scored the Titans other touchdown with a one yard plunge into the Warriors end-zone. Jarod Roberson was also an offensive standout for the Blue-Titans.
Defensively Michael Dowhaniuk had an interception and Thane Martin, Josh Tweed, Nathaniel Hunt and Kayla Sanderson all had strong outings for the Blue-Titans.

The Blue-Titans finished the season in ninth place with a 5-5 record, an outstanding accomplishment for Head Coach Jaret Russell and his team comprised primarily of first year Pee Wee players, even more outstanding considering one of the top players in the division, Michael Dowhaniuk, missed three games due to injury and played the final two games of the season hurt, the Blue-Titans were among the division leaders with a 4-1 record prior to Dowhaniuk’s injury.

Dowhaniuk and the majority of the Blue-Titans squad will be back for their second year of Pee Wee next season and should be among the Divisions leaders.

The Midget Titans have one more week left in their regular season schedule and will need it to tune up and shake off some rust in time for the playoffs
after sitting idle for the past three weeks.

The Titans last game was an October 24 victory over the North Surrey Bears, they had an expected bye the following week due to the folding of the Richmond Raiders but were unexpectedly forced to take a bye for the second week in a row when the Cowichan Bulldogs opted to save themselves a ferry trip and not appear for their scheduled game last Sunday in South Surrey, both games were recorded as forfeit 10-0 wins for the Titans but would most likely have been wins had they played them on the field.

While the Titans sat idle the rest of the Midget Division sorted itself out and heading into the final weekend of play the Titans are guaranteed no worse than a fourth place finish, if the Titans take care of business and everything else falls into place this Sunday the Titans could find themselves heading into the post season as high as the number two seed.

The Midget Titans finish the season with a trip to West Vancouver’s Carnarvon Park for a game with the 2-7 Westside Warriors, despite the Warriors record they are a tough side and could make a game of it, especially if the Titans have trouble returning to form after the long layoff.

No matter what the result on Sunday the Midget Titans will host a playoff game at South Surrey Athletic Park on Sunday November 21, the only thing to be determined will be their opposition.

There have been some great stories surrounding Titans teams in 2010 but none greater than that of the Midget team.

Just two years ago the Titans organization regretfully had to withdraw the Midget team from playing status due to a lack of players, John Martins took the challenge of resurrecting the program in 2009 and managed to lead the
team to a respectable season despite low player numbers. Martins then proceeded to build up the program, he put together a top notch coaching staff and lured back some top quality former Titans players, by the time the
2010 season started Martins had assembled a solid team with good numbers and lots of depth, a team that is now on the verge of one of the most successful Midget seasons in Titans history.

The Junior Bantam Titans had probably the toughest schedule, in the toughest division of the VMFL, and still fell just a single point shy of making the playoffs.

The Junior Bantam division was very strong in 2010 and the Titans nine game schedule had them playing each one of the top six teams in the division once while playing only three games versus teams that finished in
among the bottom seven teams.

The season really came down to their 32-32 tie game versus the North Surrey Eagles on October 3, one of the most exciting ever played, at any level, at South Surrey Athletic Park, both teams played their hearts out and in the end that single point was the difference in making or missing the playoffs, the Eagles made and the Titans missed.

Head Coach Brian Clancy did a great job with his squad and will have a solid returning core that will make the JB Titans and is a good bet to climb back into the upper level of the division in 2011.

The Atom Division Titans wrapped up the season with both teams missing the playoffs but can draw a lot of positives out of the 2010 season, both teams were made up of mostly first year Atoms, many who were making the jump from
flag and quite a few who had never played football before. The Atom Division was another that was in a strong cycle, with many clubs fielding strong teams that were laden with second year Atom players. The prospects for Titans Atom Football is good for 2011, with most of the players returning as second year players and some quality first year players moving up from our strong flag program.

The Atom Blue-Titans went into the final weekend of play feeling good after a big win the week prior but were humbled by a strong Cloverdale Lions side that was made up primarily of second year players and included the gene pools of Geroy Simon and Baron Miles, the pint sized versions of their dads are outstanding athletes and destined to be stars at every level they play. Head Coach Paul Huston can still be proud of his Blue-Titans and will find a sense of accomplishment in their 2-8 season, a respectable year considering the majority of his squad was pretty much a flag team in shoulder pads.

The Atom White-Titans were also in tough in the experience department, with most of it’s players either first year Atoms or first year football players. The White-Titans probably had the tougher schedule of the two Atom teams and had the pleasure of opening the season with a game versus the Simon and Miles crew in Cloverdale. It took several weeks for the White-Titans to recover from their opening day thrashing by Geroy’s Lions but Head Coach Dana Davis and coach Tony Hunt did a great job of teaching the skills and keeping the team moving forward in a positive fashion. The White-Titans finished the season without a win but the defense was good all year and the offense really started to come together and put points on the board in the final three weeks of the season.

The Titans Flag program once again has been outstanding, and the numbers keep growing, which means good things for the organization’s future.

Thanks to Coach Jason Davies for holding the group of almost 40 flaggers together in the early stages of the season and for his efforts to separate the talented group into two balanced teams.

Once the teams split The Blue-Titans were Headed by Davies and the White-Titans by Sukh Rai, who saved the day when he agreed to take a team while at the same time working on his masters degree.

Both flag teams had a great year with more wins than losses under their belt, but more importantly Jason, Sukh and the regular parent helpers did a super job of teaching the youngsters the basics of the game and instilling the skill sets that will make them better football players next year and for years to come.

Most important of all was that every time I visited the flag practices, or officiated their games the kids were laughing and having a great time learning and playing the great game of football, and that, for me, is what it’s all about.

The flaggers wrap up the season this Saturday in Coquitlam at the VMFL’s annual Flag Jambouree.

Thanks to all the coaches and volunteers

who dedicated so much of their time and effort in making this a great season of Titans football, more thanks to Charlie for… well for being Charlie, and to Lisa for somehow pulling the whole mess all together.

It’s him again.

It takes a special breed to agree to work for a CFL team which had already cut him twice this season but once again Doug Goldsby was back with the B.C. Lions Wednesday, hoping the third time is a charm.

The 23-year-old UBC product from White Rock definitely gets marks for perseverance. Twice this year he has been deleted off the practice roster of the Lions, yet he still believed in their sincerity when told the club needed non-import depth on special teams after the recent season-ending injuries to Davis Sanchez and J.R. LaRose.

“I want to do this,” Goldsby said after signing a practice roster agreement. “The question is always ‘do you give up’ and for me that answer is ‘no’.”

A dual citizen who was born in the U.S., the appeal to Goldsby is his classification as a non-import despite the fact he played high school football in Blaine, Wash. He spent last season with the Montreal Alouettes, and every time he gets cut by the Lions he goes back to work on finishing his UBC degree or helps coach the midget team with the White Rock Titans.

“I haven’t taken a day off yet,” he said.

Coach/GM Wally Buono became aware of Goldsby when he went to watch his son, Michael, play for the Titans after moving from Calgary. Not only did Goldsby catch his eye, so did kicker Sean Whyte and receiver Josh Boden, and Buono vowed one day he’d sign all three.

Getting cut wasn’t difficult the first time and was worse on Goldsby’s friends when it happened again. “It’s such a public occupation; they wonder what you’re doing,” he said. “But I’d always got positive reinforcement from the coaches.”

The goal now is to get an invitation to camp next year, providing Goldsby isn’t cut a third time. If he does, he won’t need directions to Buono’s office.

The support our younger Titans Midget players has been fantastic, their energy is contagious and it really helps to pump up our first line guys, on and off the field.

These guys know that their time will come as the stars of the Titans Midget team, that one day soon they will be the ones on the field making the big plays, and relying on the support of younger players on the sidelines.

Atom Blue-Titans 8 vs Richmond Raiders 30 – SSAP4

Quarterback Kole Turner led an impressive game opening drive that had some great runs by Isaiah Edwards and Hayden Johnson and was capped off by a Lukas Frers touchdown run.

Center Liam Kightley-Kauser gets the game ball after anchoring a strong performance by the Titans offensive line and Alisha Jeys Morrison led the way defensively with some big hits.

The Atom Blue-Titans host the North Surrey TBirds this Sunday, kick-off is 12:45 at SSAP4.

Atom White-Titans 12 at Royal City Hyacks 42

The Atom White-Titans were at Mercer Stadium on October 22 for a Friday Night game under the lights and came up with their first touchdown of the season, and it felt so good they had to do it again.

Titans touchdowns came from Alejandro Cazorla and Ivan Rojas, who also nearly came up with an amazing Atom Division feat when his 30 yard field goal attempt hit the upright.

The Atom White-Titans host the Vancouver Trojans this Sunday at 11:00 AM.

Pee Wee Blue-Titans 6 vs Langley Mavericks 18 – SSAP4

Valen Garcia played a strong two way game that included a 30 yard touchdown run, 9 tackles and a pass knock down as the Blue-Titans dropped a close one to the Langley Mavericks.

Other two way standouts were Josh Heibert and Thomas Van Egmond, leading the way defensively were Allan Edwards and Daniel Damron.

The Blue-Titans were once again without the services of Michael Dowhaniuk but still sit with a 4-4 record and right along side of the White-Titans in the hunt for a playoff spot.

The Pee Wee Blue-Titans next game is on Wednesday November 3 when they turn on the lights at SSAP4 for a 7:00 PM game versus the Royal City Hyacks.

Pee Wee White-Titans 12 at Langley Cowboys 7 – McLeod Stadium

After dropping each of their last two games by identical 5 point margins the Pee Wee White-Titans turned the tables and posted a 5 point win over the Cowboys on Sunday in Langley.

Kurtis Nicholas and Jaxon McMillan were offensive standouts for the Titans with a touchdown each while Quinn Huizinga, Evan Plett and Aidan Ellis led the way in a hard hitting, gutsy outing for the Titans defense.

Robbie Sutherland was given the Titans game ball for his all around great effort.

The White-Titans are currently tied with three other teams at 4-4 and in a battle for one of the the final two playoff spots, one of those teams is the Titans next opposition, the North Surrey Cardinals.

A win over the Cardinals this Sunday at SSAP4 will clinch a playoff spot for the White-Titans, game time is 2:30PM.

JB Titans 8 at Cloverdale Cougars 42 – Clov. Athletic Park

The Junior Bantam Titans had a tough day in Cloverdale but still came up with the play of the game when Mathew Green blocked a Cougars field goal attempt then scooped up the ball and sprinted 90 yards to the endzone for a touchdown. JC Abbott was given the Titans game ball for his outstanding all around effort.

Despite the loss the Titans still hold down the eighth and final playoff spot, by a single point over the Langley Wranglers, who sit 9th. The Titans can finish a high as 6th pending the outcome of this week-ends games.

The Titans wrap up their nine game regular season this Sunday when they pay a visit to Coquitlam for a must win game versus the Vikings.

(The JB Division playing 9 game schedule this year, all other divisions still playing 10)

Bantam Titans 28 at Westside Warriors 0 – Carnarvon Park

Great effort by all as the Bantam Titans clinched a playoff berth with 28-0 win over Westside. The win moved the Titans into a two way tie for fourth place with Cowichan, a 4th place or higher finish would bring a home playoff game to South Surrey.

Nico Docolas had a strong day running the ball and, along with the Titans offensive line, helped clear the way for Peter Kilberg, who scored three touchdowns on the day.

The Titans defensive unit gave up very little ground to the Warriors and limited the West Van team to just one scoring chance, leading the way for the Titans defense were Logan Mackie and Sebastian Laverde, who each had an interception. Aaron Jaerlich, Dylan Kazda, Travis Grandjambe, and Jeff Toews were other Titans defensive standouts.

The Bantam Titans host the 0-8 North Surrey Panthers on Halloween afternoon, kick-off is 4:15 PM.

Midget Titans 13 vs N. Surrey Bears 10 – SSAP4

Andrew Darcovich scored touchdown and Nathan Leader the game winning field goal with seconds remaining in the game as the Midget Titans extended their winning streak to four games with a 13-10 win over the pesky North Surrey Bears on Sunday.

The Bears jumped out to an early 3-0 lead but minutes later Darcovich took a short pass from Calderwood and turned it into a 39 yard touchdown play to put the Titans ahead 7-3, a lead that they would take into the break thanks to a clutch Darcovich interception deep in Titans territory to end the first half of play. The Titans went up by 10-3 midway through the third with Nathan Leader’s 39 yard field goal, that 7 point lead stood until late in the fourth quarter when the Bears tied the game on a 90 yard interception return touchdown. The Titans took the ensuing kick-off and got some great running by Steven Bouchard in a drive that marched them the length of the field and set up Nathan Leaders game winning 10 yard field goal with only seconds remaining.

The Titans defensive unit had another strong outing and had the Bears pinned on their side of center field for most of the second half. Darryl Stacey led the way defensively with a pair of sacks and a fumble recovery and Brandon LeMoignan, Tyler Leader, Tanner Figueroa and Nathan Leader, with an interception, were other standouts on the Titans defense.

The win improves the Titans record to 5-2 on the season and has them in the hunt for a spot in the top four of the Midget division and the first home playoff game in Midget Titans history.

The Titans record will improve to 6-2 this weekend without stepping on the field as their scheduled game versus the now defunct Richmond Raiders will go down as a Titans default 10-0 win.

BENCH STRENGTH KEY TO MIDGET TITANS SUCCESS

For the first time in many years the Midget Titans have a solid roster with depth at many positions, but they also have bench strength like never before coming in the form of the enthusiasm and positive attitude from their younger, and less experienced players on the sidelines.

The support our younger Titans Midget players has been fantastic, their energy is contageous and it really helps to pump up our first line guys when they come to the bench and when they are on the field.

These kids are fine with their role on the team and know that their time will come as the stars of the Titans Miget program, that one day soon they will be the ones on the field making the big plays, and relying on the support of younger players on the sidelines.
